What is Modbus? Master, slave and function codes

Modbus is one of the most widely used open communication protocols in industry. It uses a simple master/slave structure.

Master and slave

A master (PLC, HMI or a computer) reads or writes a slave device's data. The slave only responds; it never speaks on its own.
